You will find only two kinds of blush in the market; powder and cream. I would recommend you to use a cream blush or a tinted moisturizer rather than a powder blush for its ease of application.
If you want to apply Powder Blush, it is recommended that you powder your face well before applying powder blush so your face does not look messy.
Note: If you have large pores, you can use a cream-to-powder base so that powder blush doesn’t settle into the pores. For achieving a natural look, apply another layer of face powder over the powder blush using a large brush. Try to use blush shades that correspond with your lip color. Your blush must also correspond with your skin tone or the foundation you have applied.
It is important to note that brown or flesh tones are a good choice for day wear because that is when you would want a natural and fresh look. However, it is not a good idea for evening wear when you would want slightly darker tones.
The intensity of color achieved depends on the size of your brush and how much pressure you apply it with. Always use a large brush when you want a natural effect, of course. For more intensity and accuracy, use a small brush. Afterwards, you can use a large brush to apply bronzer to the whole face.
With blush, you can even give a different impact to your face, depending on your face shape. You can make it look softer or a clearer cut with just a few strokes of your blush. Following are the four types of faces generally found. Yours might be one of them.
If you have an Oval Face
If you have this face shape, it is very easy for you to acquire any sort of look you want. If you want a fresh, natural and young look, just stroke a large brush right over your cheekbone as this will have the effect of filling out your face if it is thin. I would recommend light colors for you as they will make you look fresh.
If you want an extravagant touch, then just put your blush slantingly at the point where your cheekbone slopes down to the cheek. You can apply intensive tones using a smaller brush. Hence you can achieve a well defined look desirable for evening wear.
If you have a Heart Face
I would say this shape is the hardest to apply blush to. This is because without any make up, such a face shape looks pointy with the chin being very prominent. It needs to be softened so as to look a little oval.
For this you will have to use a small brush, place it at the outermost point of your cheekbone and start stroking it downwardly and inwardly, but inwardly too only vertically with your eye. After you have done that, use the powder that is left on the brush to start stroking the temples upwards into the corners of your forehead.
Note: Don’t apply blush on a heart face shape slopingly like you would on an oval face. This won’t suit you.
If you have a Square Face
This kind of face shape has a lot of space and a wide chin. To apply blush on such a face shape, start diagonally halfway down the cheekbone, rather than on it. This is to take some weight off the chin and break the space. You can make your face look soft by applying some blush on the corners of your forehead. For this, just use the powder left on the brush.
If you have a Round Face
If you have a round face, I would recommend you don’t use any glitter or shiny powder. This is because you want to contour your face and the glittery effect will only make your roundness prominent which you don’t want. I would say just use matte products and brown is a good option.
For this, you will have to use a small brush which you will place at the ear level and stroke it along the cheek to contour towards the
mouth corner. Try making short strokes as you work your way towards the mouth, this will ensure natural blending. Now, using the powder left on the brush, apply a bit on the area between your hairline and the eyebrows and viola!
Remember to use
- very little pressure when applying blush. Apply more times only where you want more intensity.
- On a light complexion, use light tones of blush. Dark tones are for dark complexions.
- After applying blush, when you want to shade your forehead corners, only use the powder left on your brush.
- Always use a brush to blend your powder blush as blending with your finger might spoil your base, unless it’s cream blush.
